A palpable sense of 'what might have been' fills the air for the characters who inhabit a country estate in a small Russian village. Set in the 1890's, Uncle Vanya uncovers the desperate longing, unrequited love and bitter frustrations that surface when an ageing professor and his young wife return home.
Darkly comic, deeply touching and rich in language and emotion, Chekhov's masterpiece is a passionate and often very funny exploration of love, desire and loss.
Hall is enjoying a blaze of glory, directing with freshness and magificently catching the miraculous mixture of humour and sadness with superb precision.
The Daily TelegraphThere are beautiful moments in this show, not least its metronomic ending as the characters recognise their fate.
The Daily MailThose wanting an "Uncle Vanya" that finds both the aggression and the antic humor behind the torpor, look no further.
The New York TimesLike all great Chekhov productions, this Vanya creates the illusion that we are watching the unmediated flow of life itself rather than a carefully calculated piece of art.
The TelegraphCongratulations on 'Uncle Vanya'. Benedict Nightingale of the Times & the rest of his chums gave you four stars. Cheapskates! I'll give you the maximum five. This afternoon's performance was an absolute joy.
Pauline StaintonMy wife and I saw Uncle Vanya at Brighton last week and we wanted you, and all concerned with the production, to know how much we enjoyed the performance, which we thought admirable in every respect. Many years ago we saw a memorable production with Ralph Richardson, Laurence Olivier, Joyce Redmond and (we think) Margaret Leighton. Our memories of it are still vivid. We thought your production was better!
