That was 2011...

20 January 2012

2011 – what a great year!

It kicked off in style with a trio of awards for English Touring Theatre: firstly we were named Producer of the Year in the inaugural Stage 100 Awards, which was a real honour, and received two Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland for The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain, which we co-produced with The Traverse and Coventry Belgrade.

In spring we worked with a glorious company to put on Tanika Gupta’s adaptation of Great Expectations, co-produced with Watford Palace Theatre. We were rushed off our feet over the summer, with three shows between May and July: our new production of JB Priestly’s Eden End with Royal and Derngate, Northampton was well received across the country, and in London we co-produced both Hundreds and Thousands, with Buckle for Dust at Soho Theatre, and Little Baby Jesus at Oval House with BEcreative. We’re working on plans to take Little Baby Jesus further afield in the year to come, so watch this space!

Possibly our highlight of the year was our Autumn tour of Roger McGough’s sparkling adaptation of Moliere’s Tartuffe, which played to rapturous audiences and packed houses on the tour, not to mention picking up glowing reviews from national and local critics alike.

With these five productions, English Touring Theatre staged 222 performances, including 42 accessible performances, in 22 different venues across the country, to a total of 48,656 audience members. Combined, our travelling cast and crew totalled 130, who between them racked up 34 weeks on the road.

It’ll be difficult to top all that in 2012, but with Anne Boleyn on tour from March, The Real Thing from May and many more exciting productions in the pipeline for 2012 and beyond, we certainly won’t be putting our feet up…
