Welcome to this performance of HAMLET.
In recent months ETT has been relaunched, with a new look and a new way of producing our work. We’re delighted to have attracted five remarkable actors – Joanna Lumley, Diana Quick, Alan Rickman, Simon Russell Beale and Timothy West – to join Sir Ian McKellen as Patrons, and their support is invaluable in helping us realise our ambitions.
The play is, of course, the thing and we are in the middle of one of our most exciting and ambitious seasons ever. It is entirely appropriate that our much admired production of Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead should be followed by a production of the play that inspired it. Hamlet will be followed in the early 2006 with a revival of Alan Bennett’s The Old Country, with Timothy West as the retired spy in exile, and later in the year we will be marking the 50th anniversary of the death of Bertolt Brecht, one of modern theatre’s greatest dramatists, by presenting a major revival of his masterpiece Mother Courage and her Children.
We are thrilled to have attracted so many people from all walks of life to join our supporters schemes. Every penny that you give helps us keep high quality drama on the road. We are also grateful to the many Trusts and Foundations listed on page x who help make our touring possible.
At the heart of everything we do is a resolute commitment to the idea that great drama can speak to everyone and that audiences everywhere expect and deserve the best. We very much hope you enjoy this performance and will follow our work wherever it may be.
