A brother. A sister. An uncovered past...

Johnny is alone in the family home, surrounded by squalor, when a stranger arrives. In one tense and desperate night a sibling reunion evokes powerful childhood memories and long-buried, aching secrets are unearthed…

Paul Robinson's punchy revival...powerfully written, finely acted
    The Times ****

Hello and Goodbye, by the internationally acclaimed and award winning playwright Athol Fugard, is a raw and profound autobiographical play which captures the explosive conflict between siblings Johnny and Hester.  This West End premiere exposes the rotten underbelly of ruptured lives in Port Elizabeth, South Africa under the dark cloud of apartheid.

There is much to admire in both Fugard's writing and Paul Robinson's deeply felt, atmospherically designed production. Powerfully poignant….powerful performances The acting is outstanding. Rafe Spall, son of the great Timothy, beautifully captures the mental fragility and nagging fear of Johnny, who has no idea of how to live life on his own, and is terrified of the emptiness that faces him. Meanwhile Saskia Reeves reveals a desolate depth of pain and despair behind the tough-cookie facade of the street prostitute, especially when she describes the death of her mother with heart-catching clarity and detail. There is a spontaneity, rawness and sense of shared memory about these two exceptional performances that make this play very special indeed.
